Hot Take: Nobody’s Discovering you on your Homepage, They’re Judging you There

Hot Take: Nobody’s Discovering you on your Homepage, They’re Judging you There

We’ve all been obsessing over the wrong page.

The homepage isn’t where buyers meet you anymore; it’s where they make up their mind about what they already think they know. (6sense reports that the pre-contact favourite wins roughly 80% of the time)

Think about the last time you bought something meaningful for your business.

Did you land on the vendor’s homepage cold, know nothing, and work your way through their nav? Probably not.

You’d already seen them somewhere: a LinkedIn post, an Instagram recommendation, a Reddit thread, maybe an AI-generated comparison you didn’t ask for but read anyway.

By the time you hit their site, you weren’t researching. You were confirming.

That’s the shift most marketing teams still haven’t fully reckoned with. The homepage used to be a discovery layer. Now it’s a confirmation layer. And there’s a massive difference between the two.

If the narrative upstream is murky, no homepage redesign in the world will fix it. You can’t polish your way out of a positioning problem.

The real first touch isn’t on your domain. It’s scattered across a dozen places you may not even be tracking:

  • A LinkedIn post from someone on your team
That’s the first time a buyer forms an opinion about your POV.
(LinkedIn found 62.3% of marketers value peer recommendations over high brand awareness, and 93.7% say trust is the most important factor in B2B brand success.)
  • A comparison thread on Reddit or LinkedIn
That’s where you get framed by other people, on their terms.
  • An AI summary that may or may not get you right
That’s increasingly deciding whether you’re even in the consideration set.(Zero-click search rates rose from 56% to 69% since the launch of AI Overviews)

Perception gets shaped in these fragments. The homepage just reflects back whatever the market already believes about you. If that belief is fuzzy, your homepage will feel fuzzy too, no matter how many times you rewrite the hero copy.

And yet teams keep redesigning. Keep A/B testing headlines. Keep hiring conversion specialists. All on a page that was never doing the heavy lifting to begin with.

The brands that are actually cutting through have figured this out. They’re spending less energy perfecting pages and more energy owning narrative, consistently, across every channel a buyer might wander through before they ever click anything. A perspective that’s impossible to confuse with a competitor.

Because in a world where buyers do most of their deciding before they visit you, influence has to be built before the click (6sense found the pre-contact favourite wins roughly 80% of the time).

The uncomfortable reframe: Stop asking “is our homepage converting?” and start asking “what does the market already believe about us before they get there?” The second question is harder, and worth ten times more.

TTC POV:

Win the narrative before the visit. Everything else follows.

At TTC, we work backwards from the moment a buyer lands on your site, asking what they should already believe by the time they get there. That shapes how we approach positioning, thought leadership, and cross-platform narrative.

The goal isn’t to explain your value at the last minute. It’s to establish it so clearly, so early, that the homepage just closes what the rest of your presence already opened.
